This is considered one of the core contents for training, so we focused on the Wind Turbine Repair subject throughout the training course. Wind Turbine External Structure Repair Training

Wind turbine blades are originally made of composite materials, which are a combination of enmeshing plastics (polymers) with other materials (often fibers) to form an advanced matrix. Despite being protected by surface coatings and other heat-resistant waterproofing protection layers, the wind turbine blades are still very vulnerable because of the surrounding environment. Therefore, the repair the wind turbine blade’s external structure is also one of the most important issues in wind turbine repair and maintenance process.

MBWIND’s Wind Turbine Inspection and Repair Training Course Outcome:

After completing the training course, MBWIND’s engineers were able to equip themselves with a relative amount of knowledge and reap certain attainments. In particular, the knowledge gained after the training course can be divided into the following certification levels:

Level 1 certification 

+ At level 1, trained engineers have the knowledge to:

  • Understanding the general construction description of WTG blades
  • Understanding the involved health risks when handling polyester, epoxy and isocyanates
  • Use the correct terms when approaching blades
  • Recognize different types of defects and damage
  • Evaluation and classification of defects and damage

+ And have the capacity to:

  • Proficiently inspect of Turbine Wings with the naked eye, camera, rope, manipulator platform or crane
  • Visually inspect the surface in detail. Use tools to check for further damage by sanding to remove damaged paint/gelcoat, and visually inspect coatings and bonded joints.
  • Repair minor cosmetics on surface coatings
  • Report the wind turbine condition for every phase

Level 2 certification 

At Level 2, engineers would get qualify for the following duty:

  • Inspect internal and external structures, assess and classify damage on the turbine blade surface.
  • Reading comprehension and using properly information from:

+ The Turbine Brand’s working instructions
+ Technical datasheet

  • Repair Turbine blades surface for all types, including:

+ Cover and laminate down the core or first two layers of fiberglass.

+ Double-layer headband.

+ Maximum horizontal edge 50 mm.

+ Replace and check the lightning receiver

+ Replace stall strips, vortex generators and LE tapes

  • Fill out inspection reports and documentation of damage and repairs.
