WIND TURBINE BLADE REPAIR IN GIA LAI BY MBWIND
In October 2021, MBWIND’s after-sales on-site personnel reported that 2 TMT78.0C blade reverse bolts of Gia Lai – Song An Wind Farm in Vietnam were stuck, the length of the bolt is 480 mm, after the bolt is stuck, cut along the flange face to remove the overhang, and the stuck part needs to be dealt with.

Replacement plan
Steps to remove broken bolts on turbine blade
- Connect the generator and connect the electricity to the turbine.
- Rotate blade with broken bults facing down.
- Remove Cover so that the worker can move inside the HUB.
- Pull the repair tools upwards with a winch or lift.
- Rotate Pitch Blade part so that the broken bolt is exposed.
- Install the Φ 36 twist drill (requires a reverse drill), adjust the position of the magnetic drill, lower the drill bit to the bolt cut-off position, lower the drill bit to the bolt cut-off position, just in contact with the cut surface of the bolt, make sure there is no interference between the drill bit and the inner wall of the pitch bearing, and use a marker to draw the position where the drill bit is flush with the inspection plane a marked line, and draw another marking line at a position 110mm away from this marking line (the drill bit reaches the starting point of the bolt sleeve thread).
- After adjusting magnetic drill the position and confirming that there is no interference between the drill bit and the inner wall of the bearing, attach the magnetic drill to the tool and confirm that the drill and the tool are firmly fixed or not.
- Start the magnetic drill and turn it counterclockwise and slowly lower the drill bit to the bolt cutting position until it contacts the bolt, If the magnetic drill or tooling shake occurs during the following cutting process, the magnetic drill should be turned off immediately to avoid the drill bit breaking or damage to the pitch bearing, check and confirm the reason, and then continue after adjustment, the speed of lowering the knife is slow.
- If the bolt does not come out, use a drill bit 18 to drill into the center of the bolt, , then use M20 tap ( reverse M20 tap ). Drill clockwise to remove broken bolt.
- Use a rod with a magnet to attract iron filings after drilling.
- Then use the Tension pump to install new bolts and nuts. Use tightening force according to technical requirements
Steps to tapped valve drill thread hole for blade.
- Connect the generator and connect the electricity to the turbine.
- Rotate blade with broken bults facing down.
- Remove Cover so that the worker can move inside the HUB.
- Pull the repair tools upwards with a winch or lift.
- Rotate the Pitch Blade to expose the damaged thread hole.
- To rerun the damaged threaded hole, run to the end of the threaded hole.
- Use a rod with a magnet to attract iron filings after tapped valve drill
- Then use the Tension pump to install bolts and nuts. Use tightening force according to technical requirement.
